What moment could be more fitting than now to look back at our favorite projects over the years?
Bucharest and Singapore, July 2024 — Brandient turns twenty-two. Twenty-two years, over 250 projects, seven of its own brand identities and five websites later, the partners and the team each revisit a favorite project from along the years.
Cristian Kit Paul, Founding Partner & Creative Director
You know — pantofarul.

When you have worked on a project for 22 years, it is both very easy and very hard to talk about it. When that project is the identity of your own company, you find yourself in the situation of the shoemaker who, obsessed with offering his clients the best quality he is capable of, cheerfully ignores the chill of the fact that his own shoes are full of holes.
In 2002 Aneta was writing educational articles about what a brand is — at the time the idea was exotic: some believed the brand was the trademark, others that it was the logo, others the slogan — while I was writing, just as educationally, Brand/ient, spoon-feeding the meaning: Brand + (i)ent (that which is, which belongs to, which makes). A company that belongs to the world of brands, that makes brands — and a brand in itself. Brandient.
The years passed and, leaving the pioneering stage behind, we drew and redrew our logo with an acorn, suggesting how from a small, frail idea there can (can!) grow — investing years, money, and luck — a huge, perennial, solid value. From the many acorns created back then a few giants actually did grow — Dedeman, eMAG, the Flanco stores, CEC Bank, Qfort, Albalact, Transavia and others.
My colleague Ciprian Bădălan took over the identity and began modernizing it, ignoring the chorus of protests that came with changing the fonts we were all used to (we are a small company, but with strong opinions). The new identity grew in parallel with the identities of our clients — Banca Transilvania, Bitdefender, Silva beer, FRF and the National Football Team, Freshful, Geneco Singapore, Oradea, Fashion Days, Tazz and others.
Ciprian Robu also tried his hand at the Brandient identity, taking it in a funkier direction. We implemented it in slow motion, over almost two years, watching in despair how it was always at the tail end of the project list. You know — the shoemaker. Meanwhile there happened Luca, BT Star, another iteration of Bitdefender, Team Romania — the commercial emblem of Romania's Olympic Team —, Cărturești, Libris, Trickshot, another Flanco iteration after 19 years — and the story continues. And continues. And continues.
Twenty-two years, seven identities and five websites later, Brandient is still… well, Brandient. Some of us a little grayer and more experienced, with an extra 450,000 km and 700 flight hours, some having become partners, others freshly come aboard.
My favorite project is Brandient, and I hope I never finish it.

Your house is on fire, your children are alone.” (humor included)

I kept trying to choose, but I cannot! It is 22 years, over 250 projects, thousands of people involved!
Psychoanalyzing myself, though, I realized that the projects that came to mind almost instantly are the big, complex rebrandings, with high organizational and business stakes; in other words, the projects that are hard not only intellectually and professionally, but also emotionally, with direct reference to the challenges that derive from engaging with solid businesses, charismatic human groups and powerful people.
When I think of CEC Bank, I do not feel the burden of those 14 months of assiduous, upside-down teamwork; I remember the life lessons I received from the employees who kept believing — even after 20 years of failures in business — that CEC can, and deserves to, go forward.
When I think of YTL Corporation Asia, I do not relive the intellectual panic triggered by our attempt to position a conglomerate of over 100 companies; I remember the teachings received from the members of the founding Yeoh family about loyalty and competition within a family of 7 siblings and 24 grandchildren, and about “doing the right thing.”
When I think of eMAG, what comes to mind is not how we managed to draw and redraw the technology of e-commerce convenience, but the encounter with an entrepreneur almost eccentric in his appetite for exploration and self-actualization.
When I think of Bitdefender, it is not the 3 rounds of rebranding we did under the pressure of technological disruptions that impress me, not even the spectacular symbol of the Dacian wolf; I still feel the warning of the challenges of the cultural merger between the Romanian group in Bucharest and the American one.
A brand consultant's work is umbilically tied to the business context and the organizational one. The more complicated, more complex, more challenging these two were, the more intensely I lived the feeling of Tom Waits in his famous refrain, “Hey little bird, fly away home / Your house is on fire, your children are alone.” (humor included)

Although it was really hard for me to choose, I embraced the challenge and chose: Cărturești.
After countless series of intellectual and challenging discussions about the philosophy of a “cult brand” and around what it has to say to the world, together with the client — creative, effervescent, charming himself — we reached a surprising destination: a name and a flexible, polymorphic design made up of a puzzle of words and icons, a conversational brand identity, fit for transformative times and for changing lifestyle needs. A living identity, for an… iconic brand that speaks to the world in a manner of its own. Pure intellectual pleasure, in short.
I admit, the answer to the question “Cărtur-ești?” (“are you?”) is: “Da, cărturesc…” (“yes, I am…”)

Klarwin
—Mihai Bogdan, Founding Partner & CFO
The Klarwin project is a living demonstration of the statement “more than name & logo” — an expression used as a mantra in the branding industry, including by many who are not capable of delivering even a decent name and/or logo. Of course, creating the Klarwin name, with the global “.com” address and protectable worldwide, and the original, instantly recognizable logo, is no small thing — but somehow these have become “for granted” deliverables at Brandient.
That “more” shows over time, and it is all the force, the energy, the impetus with which a well-built brand opens doors and pushes the business forward — and in the case of an entrepreneurial business trying to establish itself on the market, this help is priceless. The Klarwin brand established itself on a competitive market, expanded internationally, and the founder periodically returns to Brandient for brand development and new extensions — which was to be demonstrated.

As a designer, it is impossible to choose a favorite project. Design projects are like your children — you cannot have favorites.
The favorite is always the next project.

The Biz magazine cover, awarded at Red Dot
My favorite project remains the cover design for the issue of BIZ magazine dedicated to Singapore's booming business scene. The approach was to create a wordmark inspired by Singapore's unique artistic and architectural monuments — thus, each letter in the name of the city-state is inspired by a real landmark — “S” describes the celebrated Merlion sculpture, the national symbol of the state, while “E” represents the famous Marina Bay Sands hotel, and so on.
The moment I finished tracing the wordmark, I was struck by the profoundly Asian spirit of the result — this newly discovered aptitude of architects to imbue the Singaporean landscape with the Asian calligraphic spirit showed me a higher level of approaching creative projects with an identification role, a higher way of doing branding of country and of one's own culture. A level of involvement you cannot help but aspire to as a designer. And a priceless gift for the one who notices it with the mind too, not only with the soul.

Team Romania
—Diana Carla Benea, Senior Brand Consultant
Romania rhymes with pride — “România” with “mândria” — so the brief was clear from the start.
Team Romania is more than a project — when every task comes with an extra mile, because the stake is not just a super branding project, but the impact of a brand that represents our country before the entire world.
And more than a client — when you have the honor of working together with those great athletes you kept your fingers crossed for, in front of the television, when you were a child.
Delia Soare, Senior Brand Consultant
Flanco Smart Discounter
—Delia Soare, Senior Brand Consultant
The case of the Flanco Smart Discounter repositioning and rebranding was, for me, a lesson about the importance of human relationships in consultancy projects.
About how much it matters that, behind the context, the market, the business or the consumer, you understand the people in the organization who implement the brand strategy. A project that began without much enthusiasm or optimism became a business-transformation case study thanks to an honest client, guard down, who knew what they wanted, what they could do, and how to align their entire organization on the same road and instill in them the discipline of implementation.
It was an extremely complex and difficult project that took an enormous amount of work... but it was all worth it.
Twenty-two years, over 250 projects, thousands of people involved — and the story continues.
