Not Just a New Logo. A True Business Transformation

In the world of business, rebranding is often mistakenly perceived as the silver bullet—a “fix it all” solution for a dip in performance, in market share, or in public perception. It’s tempting to believe that a flashy new logo or a snazzy tagline will turn the tide, but the truth is, a rebrand can only be as impactful as the changes it reflects within the organization itself. Much like in life, where a mere makeover doesn’t alter how people truly perceive you, a rebranding that isn’t deeply anchored in business strategy and culture will ring hollow to stakeholders. However, when done right, its impact can make all the difference.

Faced with the declining share of market (SOM), and the erosion of its brand appeal to customers, the leadership of Flanco—the 3rd largest electronics and IT retailer in Romania—recognized that “cosmetic tweaks” will not suffice. They needed a total transformation.

As a result, Brandient was commissioned to carry out a bold repositioning and full-scale rebranding that would not only refresh the brand’s look and feel, but fundamentally reshape Flanco’s unique selling proposition. The results? A runaway success.

Repositioning the Brand with a Bold New Identity

The first strategic decision was to redefine what Flanco stands for in the eyes of consumers, partners, competitors, and its own employees. Brandient proposed a game-changing shift: positioning Flanco as Romania’s First Smart Discounter. This wasn’t just a shiny new tagline. It introduced a completely fresh business model, built to resonate deeply with the new movement of “smart-shopping” in consumer behaviour. The “Smart Discounter” concept—prominently displayed on the stores’ fascias—created a brand new market category, allowing Flanco to stand out in the highly competitive retail landscape.

From Rebranding to Complete Business Transformation

Flanco’s repositioning didn’t stop at visuals or messaging. The rebranding rippled through every part of the business, turning the concept of “Smart Discounter” into an operational mantra. This shift impacted everything from the acquisition model—focusing on smarter sourcing to deliver the best discounts—to the logistics and supply chain, which were optimized to support the discounting strategy. It also redefined the customer service approach, aligning the entire staff with a value-driven mindset, while reshaping the corporate culture around efficiency and agility.

In terms of design, every brand manifestation reflected this transformation. From corporate stationery and business cards, to the digital platform and delivery trucks, everything was redesigned to reflect the brand’s new promise. As a retail brand, a special focus in the redesign was placed on the stores: with redesigned fascia and windows, security gates, wall decor, product displays, signage system, POSM (Point of Sale Marketing), ensuring that even the price labels and fiscal receipts reflected the “Smart Discounter” ethos. The communication strategy and design—both internal and external—were aligned with the new brand narrative, encompassing everything from in-store promotions, catalogs, and TV graphics to radio spots and online advertising.

The change wasn’t only skin deep. Flanco understood that, for the rebrand to be successful, the shift had to permeate the entire organization. Enter the Discounts Laboratory, a conceptual framework that reshaped the company’s internal culture. This new narrative was embedded into the employee journey, from recruitment to day-to-day operations, ensuring that every team member is a part of this transformation. From Flanco headquarters’ office design to employee engagement initiatives, every step reinforced the rebrand’s purpose.

A Testament to True Change: Fast-Tracked Success

The plan was initially cautious: pilot the rebranding in a single store, followed by a phased rollout to four to six locations within the first year. However, the market response was so overwhelmingly positive that Flanco’s leadership had no choice but to speed things up. Just six months later, ten stores had been rebranded across Romania. Consumers embraced the new Flanco, and internally, the brand’s rejuvenation sparked a wave of enthusiasm among employees.

The Key to Success: Collaboration and Commitment

Of course, none of this would have been possible without a strong partnership between Flanco’s leadership and the Brandient team. The fast, disciplined and decision-making top management and the seamless implementation by Flanco’s internal teams ensured that the rebranding wasn’t just a theoretical exercise, but a lived reality.

In the end, Flanco’s story is a powerful reminder that rebranding isn’t about slapping a new logo on old problems. It’s about deeply embedding a new identity into the very fabric of the business. When done right, as Flanco has shown, it can reignite market interest, boost internal culture, and transform the brand into a powerful force in the marketplace. The success of Flanco’s Smart Discounter model isn’t just proof of a clever rebrand—it’s proof of a real business evolution. And for those of us in the consultancy world, this is exactly what makes the process so rewarding.
