2026 — Nadia Comăneci Year
Celebrating fifty years since the perfect 10
In July 2025 Romania did something it almost never does: it wrote a single citizen into the national calendar by law. Law 130/2025, promulgated by President Nicușor Dan on 10 July 2025, declared 2026 the "Year of Nadia Comăneci," marking half a century since the first perfect 10 in the history of gymnastics — the 10.00 Nadia scored at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, a result so far outside the rules that the scoreboard, built only for marks up to 9.99, could not display it and showed "1.00." The same law named the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee as the institution that would coordinate the whole anniversary year. That handed the Committee a problem no statute could solve for it: an entire year of commemoration was about to unfold across dozens of institutions, events, partners and cities, and there was nothing for all of it to belong to — no single, ownable platform a national program could be built on, and nothing coherent that sponsors and partners could choose to stand next to. A law and an anniversary are not a brand, and without one the year’s considerable goodwill — and its commercial potential — would scatter across uncoordinated logos and improvised associations.
The Committee brought Brandient in to give the year a brand, and the first decision was strategic rather than visual: to build the year on the strength of Nadia’s personal brand, not on nostalgia. The personal brand of Nadia Comăneci is one of the strongest image vectors Romania owns — a much-loved brand DNA with international reach, built on a rare set of associations: sporting elite, performance, perfectionism, the absolute superlative, innovation, an all-time record, and the freedom of a life story. Framed that way, the anniversary stops being a date to be marked and becomes a brand to be associated with — a platform a company or an institution can borrow a piece of meaning from, on terms the coordinating institution controls. That reframing answered the Committee’s real objective: to make private companies, public bodies and the public aware of the chance to support the year, and to govern every one of those associations to a consistent, professional standard instead of negotiating each one from scratch.
From that strategy Brandient built the brand for the year — its positioning, its name, its idea and its identity. The governing decision was modern over nostalgic: not a commemorative throwback but a contemporary brand that presents Nadia as a model for new generations, because the year had to recruit a generation that never watched Montreal, not only honor the one that did. At the center is the most iconic image of the moment — the flight from the uneven bars that won the gold — drawn as a single dynamic mark and carried in the Romanian tricolor, so that the personal feat and the country read as one thing rather than two credits competing for space. The wordmark is Anul Nadia, anchored by the descriptor 50 de ani de la nota 10 — fifty years since the perfect 10 — and the brand turns even the famous scoreboard failure into a line of its own: the first 10 in the history of gymnastics, impossible even for the machine that was supposed to show it.
The discipline mattered more than any single artifact. Brandient built the brand as a flexible system rather than one fixed logo: the flight mark pairs with a family of wordmarks — Anul Nadia, Nadia 2026, Nadia 10 — and extends to a separate personal identity for Nadia herself, all governed by a brand book. The point of that system is commercial. Across a year of events, signage, a documentary, merchandise and co-branding, every partner and every application had to speak with one voice, and every sponsor association had to be held to the same standard rather than assembled case by case — which is precisely what lets the coordinating institution open the year to commercial partners without diluting the asset it is lending them.
The brand now carries the official 2026 program — a year that brings together sport, culture, education and community, reaching from Onești, designated a European City of Sport for 2026, across the country and out to Romania’s diplomatic missions abroad. It opened on 29 May 2026 in the Hall of Union at the Palace of Parliament, where the Committee’s official gala marking fifty years since the first perfect 10 gathered more than five hundred guests. The result is a brand built to do for a year what Nadia did for a sport: set a single standard, hold to it, and make a whole country feel part of it.
