Indygen
A new telco brand for the smartly connected generation
In 2013 the telecom industry was being rewired underneath the incumbents. Smartphones and mobile data were displacing the voice and text revenue the networks were built on, and the under-thirty "digital natives" — the segment worth the most over a lifetime — were also the hardest to win: price-driven, loyalty-light, and instinctively wary of a large corporate telco. For Vodafone Romania, reaching them with a cheaper tariff under the masterbrand was a losing move; this generation did not want a discounted version of their parents’ network.
So Vodafone Romania made a bolder choice: not a youth tariff but a youth brand — a stand-alone identity that could speak to the generation on its own terms, wrapped around a product framed less as a phone plan than as a digital platform for young people building their own future, layering self-development, entrepreneurial and expression tools on top of the connectivity. Brandient was engaged to create the brand, from strategy and positioning through name, narrative and full visual identity.
The strategic insight was that this generation joins movements, not price plans. So Brandient built the brand with the architecture of a cultural movement — an attitude and a manifesto, not merely a logo. The name carried the whole idea: Indygen, an Independent Young Generation, fusing indigen — indigenous, local, tribe, belonging — with indie, the spirit of the independent, self-determining and unconventional. It was, in a phrase, the brand of the smartly connected generation.
The design turned that idea into something you could see and hold. A custom typeface in three weights carried the brand’s restless, change-seeking energy, with a "Change" mark built into the alphabet itself as a glyph. And in the boldest stroke, Brandient reimagined the most commoditized object in all of telecom — the SIM card and its throwaway paper envelope — as a collectible: the SIM arrived housed in a series of urban-warrior designer toys, converting a disposable purchase into a brand artifact and a promotional medium at once. The result was a youth brand that looked and behaved like nothing else in the category — recognized internationally, ranked among Brand New’s best identities of 2013 and nominated for a German Design Award the following year.
