romanian football federation
Rejuvenating the FRF brand to support the Federation’s ambitious reform agenda
The Romanian Football Federation (FRF), recognized by FIFA and UEFA, serves as the official governing body for football in Romania. It plays a pivotal role in shaping the direction and governance of the sport within the country.
Romanian football had come through a long and difficult period that had left the federation’s reputation and public trust under strain. A new management team arrived with a clear mandate to modernize the sport’s governance and rebuild confidence in the institution, setting out an ambitious reform agenda. Brandient was engaged to rejuvenate the FRF brand in support of it.
The work began with a clear strategic division of labor between the federation and the teams it governs. The national team was given its own ownable idea, rooted in hope, optimism and national pride — the conviction that the team carries the nation’s aspirations onto the international stage, and that when the national team wins, the nation wins with it. The federation itself was positioned not merely as the body that governs the game, but as an enabler — the institution driving the modern, socially-minded transformation of Romanian football. This split gave each level of the brand its own role, its own voice and its own reason to exist.
The rebrand sought to project the FRF’s new vision and commitment to playing a more significant and socially relevant role. This included fostering youth participation, embracing a multi-gender approach, contributing to national healthcare programs, and promoting national engagement. The proposed brand strategy was to reposition the FRF not just as a body governing football but as a catalyst for social progress and a modern Romania. Around this stance Brandient defined a coherent set of federation values — credibility and honor, performance and progress, patriotism and social involvement, partnership and support, and passion and spectacle — that translated the reform agenda into a vocabulary the whole organization could share. This visionary stance aimed to elevate the perception of the FRF, aligning it with broader societal goals and aspirations.
The design strategy was to convey messages of respect, power, and discipline through a modern, almost digital aesthetic deeply rooted in Romania’s national colors and the reinterpretation of heraldic symbols. This approach was intended to reflect the federation’s modern outlook and its foundational values, bridging tradition with a forward-looking perspective.
A key challenge was establishing strict rules and criteria to streamline the federation’s complex brand architecture. The FRF had accumulated a sprawling portfolio of teams, competitions and programs without consistent rules for how each related to the others, or how partner and event brands sat alongside the federation crest. Brandient brought order to this system with a disciplined architecture and a clear set of relationships, so that every sub-brand — from the national team to individual competitions — reinforced rather than diluted the federation’s identity. This simplification was crucial for clear communication and effective governance.
The platform later extended into the "Generația de Suflet" initiative — a spirited, supporter-facing brand and merchandising line, centered on a hand-drawn heart that unites players and fans, channelling the emotional connection between the national team and its supporters into a contemporary lifestyle expression. Across every phase the through-line stayed the same: turning the raw national emotion that football generates into a modern, well-governed and commercially capable brand system.
In essence, the rebranding of the Romanian Football Federation was more than a cosmetic change, it was a declaration of a new era in Romanian football. Through strategic positioning and thoughtful design, the FRF aimed to transcend its role as a sports governance body, positioning itself as a herald of modernity, social progress, and national pride.
