Banca Transilvania — card portfolio redesign
A single master card-design system built to carry — and keep growing — Romania’s largest card portfolio.
Banca Transilvania is Romania’s largest bank and the country’s most systemically important institution — the bank for enterprising people, Banca Oamenilor Întreprinzători. A bank that size issues a very wide range of cards: everyday debit and credit for retail customers, premium and top tier, dedicated business lines, and special-purpose cards. As that range kept growing, a new challenge arose. It was no longer how any single card looked; it was whether the whole set still read as one bank. At this scale coherence becomes an asset and inconsistency becomes a cost — every card the bank issues either reinforces the brand or quietly dilutes it. Run in 2024–2025 as a follow-up to Brandient’s 2016 rebrand of the bank, this engagement answered that challenge with a system rather than a set of one-off designs.
Because the portfolio was both wide and still expanding, the answer was a single master design — one design language, defined once, then applied across the entire range. The master does two jobs the business needed at the same time. It holds a very wide and growing product range together under one identity, so growth no longer fragments the brand. And it works in the two places a card now lives — in the wallet and on the phone, offline and digital alike — because that is where customers meet the bank. New products enter the system without redrawing it; the master absorbs them, so the portfolio can keep growing without a fresh design exercise each time.
The system does its real work in how it handles difference. Rather than give each tier its own design, it differentiates along one legible scale — from the everyday popular cards at the base, through the premium tier in the middle, to the lux cards at the top — so the same identity tells a customer at a glance where a card stands. A second move separates the bank’s two worlds, business and personal, through one consistent variation rather than a separate design, so a business card and a personal card stay plainly in the same family while remaining instantly distinct. The levers of difference are kept few and explicit. That keeps the language disciplined as the portfolio scales, so every card reads as a point in one system rather than a one-off.
The work reached the full portfolio in stages: first proving the direction on the existing top tier, then extending it across the whole range, and finally carrying it into the business cards within the same approved taxonomy — so a portfolio of this breadth now ships consistently whatever the card network. One decision reaches past appearance: the system builds tactile recognition into the physical card, so visually-impaired customers can identify it by touch. Accessibility is built into the product, not added later.
The result is a card portfolio that behaves like one brand. Tier, activity area and status are all legible at a glance, the same system works as well in a digital wallet as in a physical one, and — most valuable to the bank — the master is flexible enough to keep absorbing new products without being rebuilt. Romania’s largest card portfolio now grows under one identity instead of pulling apart as it grows.
