Zmeu
A daily coffee with the wit of a folk-tale dragon
Tinervis Group is the company behind LUCA, the street-food chain built on the Romanian covrig — founded in 2010 by entrepreneur George Adragăi and grown, without a single franchise, into a directly operated network that has passed 200 locations in Romania and Poland, employing more than 4,200 people. At that scale, coffee is not a detail. Coffee is the natural companion of everything the chain sells, yet served as an anonymous commodity it adds nothing to the business: no margin story, no loyalty, no equity. In 2022 Tinervis framed the question the way a board would — keep pouring someone else’s coffee, or own the cup — and asked Brandient to create a coffee brand of its own.
The brief contained a problem harder than the name. The new coffee would live on the same counter as LUCA itself, so the assignment was brand architecture as much as brand creation: the two identities had to coexist in the same space without competing and without endorsing each other, at the level of palette, letterform and personality. An endorsed sub-brand would have put LUCA’s equity behind an untested product; a competing identity would have fought the chain on its own counter. Brandient’s answer was a decoupled sibling — a private-label brand with a personality entirely its own, tied to the chain by exclusivity rather than by endorsement.
The name does the strategic work. Zmeu, the dragon of Romanian folk tales, read in a modern and self-ironic key, sets the register for an urban, witty daily coffee for people who don’t take themselves too seriously. A mainstream private label will never outspend the national coffee brands, so personality is the differentiation no price move can copy — and this name generates its own verbal territory rather than waiting for a campaign budget to give it one.
The identity, delivered in 2022 and developed into a full verbal and visual platform in 2025, keeps every element working at the counter. A custom lowercase wordmark with blade-cut letterforms — the "e" reading as a split coffee bean — an orange-led palette and a triangle graphic system derived from the letters themselves signal the artisanal category at a glance while standing deliberately apart from LUCA, so the coexistence rule holds. Campaign and pack lines play the legend for a smile — "după al treilea zmeu," "with my zmeu smile," the "BREWZDUGAN de zmeu" twin-cup carrier — each signed exclusiv la LUCA, so every laugh the brand earns turns into traffic for the chain. The platform runs across the coffee pouch, takeaway cup, carrier, napkins and the in-store coffee corner.
Tinervis extended the coffee across its network from 2024 onward, and Zmeu now pours in LUCA locations across Romania, presented by the chain as its own artisanal coffee — roasted in micro batches, ground on the spot — and carrying campaigns, collector cups and a traveling caravan under its own name. What entered the brief as a commodity line on the counter now stands as an owned brand asset: one that scales with the network and belongs, outright, to the business.
