Picasol
Differentiation by design — a sunflower-oil brand built to win on brand, not price.
Romanian cooking oil is the hardest kind of market to build a brand in: slow-growing, bought almost entirely on price, dominated by three big producers and crowded with near-identical bottles that shoppers reach for by cost alone. Prutul, a producer in Galați with more than a century of oil-making behind it — the city has pressed oil since the 1890s, and Prutul traces itself to the first edible vegetable-oil factory in Romania — was a small regional player with real marketing instinct but no scale to win a price war and no corporate brand to stand on. The question Brandient was asked to answer was not how to take share, but how to make money in a market that punishes everyone who plays it on price.
The strategy work started from first principles. A small producer cannot lead on cost, so it has to lead on difference. Brandient’s recommendation was deliberate and a little contrarian: trade away the fight for market share and compete instead for margin — build a real brand where the category had only commodities, and let image, design and distribution do the work that price could not. That meant first giving Prutul itself a corporate brand — a vision, a set of values and an identity that turned a company heritage dating to 1920 into a story the company could believe in and sell behind — and then, under that corporate roof, creating a differentiated consumer brand that could carry an aspirational tone into an everyday aisle.
That brand became Picasol. In a category where rivals leaned on tired sun-and-flower names, the brief was to sidestep the worn ground entirely and coin something instantly ownable. Picasol — a drop of sun, from picătură and the Latin sol — won out against a long field of candidates for its phonetics, its memorability and the warmth of its central image: a drop of sunlight, clear and luminous. It positioned cooking as a pleasure rather than a chore, summed up in a slogan that works two ways at once — Bunăstare în mâncare reads as both richness in the food and good cheer in the kitchen — and it gave the brand a friendly, everyday character without picking a head-on fight with the entrenched premium names.
The identity made that difference physical. Where the whole aisle ran warm, Picasol went blue: a fluid, handwritten wordmark riding a strong ascending blue diagonal, set against the yellow of a sunflower field, with the slogan drawn in a calligraphic hand for warmth. And because on the shelf the bottle is the brand, Brandient designed a bespoke PET container for it — slim, modern, easy to handle, original within the hard constraints of production and retail. Name, slogan, label and bottle were tuned to feel of a piece: a coherent, pleasantly surprising whole that turned an undifferentiated commodity into something a shopper recognizes, prefers, and will pay a little more to keep.
