Dedeman
2007 Rebranding
Two decades building Romania’s DIY leader and its private-label portfolio
The inception: in 2007 Dedeman, a company in the DIY retail sector, decided to undergo a national expansion and commissioned Brandient for a rebranding exercise. Fast forward one decade, Dedeman has emerged as the absolute leader in the DIY category within the Romanian market and the national largest entrepreneurial business in terms of turnover and number of employees.
How many companies explicitly mention "hard work" and "diligence" in their mission statements? This is the approach taken by Dragoș and Adrian Pavăl — two smart and grounded Romanian entrepreneurs who built a top European DIY retail chain from scratch.
Operating in a sector severely hit by the pandemic restrictions, Dedeman remains the most valuable brand held entirely by Romanian shareholders (Brand Finance).
The brand audit framed the assignment plainly: the legacy identity had developed on the fly but at the expense of coherence and, in Brandient’s reading, effectively mute at the point of sale — strong on awareness but weak on the form, system and voice a national chain needs to carry. The strong assets worth keeping: the name itself and the distinctive orange, electric-blue and white palette, were completed by a new and complete graphic language rather than bolting a new logo onto old habits — a system that could turn signage, livery and wayfinding into one of the brand’s strongest, most consistent expressions, while prioritizing utility over over-branding.
The need for the 2007 rebranding arose not only to elevate the company’s image and support business expansion, but also to better express the brand’s pragmatic and functional personality, honesty, dedication, hard work, and perseverance. Simultaneously, the brand wanted to communicate its warm, friendly, and loyal nature. These core brand attributes are encapsulated in the brand slogan "Dedicated to your plans."
The brand’s dual personality, which uniquely blends practical, rational, and technical elements with warm, friendly, and relational vibes, inspired the creation of "the helmeted dog" as the logo and key visual. Upon first encounter, the helmeted dog—portrayed as serious and attentive rather than amusing—is likely unexpected, yet it’s also memorable. At the end of 2021, the Dedeman helmeted dog logo reached the most recognizable "brand recall" sign from Romanians.
This visual platform was consistently applied across retail design, livery, signage, and way-finding, providing the business with a modern identity that appeals to both internal and external stakeholders.

Own Labels
Brandient also conceptualized the naming and packaging design for Dedeman’s private-label umbrella brands across the store’s categories.
Etalon
The economy tier is a market of its own, with its own buyer and its own promise. Etalon — "standard" in Romanian — serves it with a dedicated value brand: 16 SKUs of construction essentials, adhesives to silicones, under a master pack Brandient designed for immediate category legibility and an identity fully its own. Baudeman leads the mainstream; Etalon wins the value shopper — two tiers, each strong on its own terms.
Baudeman
Construction materials are the highest-volume category in DIY retail, and an own brand there earns the store both the margin and the customer relationship. Brandient created Dedeman's lead private label to do exactly that: a name built on the German Bau — "to build" — that carries the sector's authority; a pentagon mark drawn from the geometry of architectural drawing; and a master-packaging architecture whose functional color code — warm for exterior, resistant, and thermal-insulation products, cool for interior and waterproofing — makes a wide range read as one brand and navigate fast on the shelf.
Panzer
Power-tool buyers choose on trust. Panzer gives Dedeman's mainstream range exactly that: a name and packaging created by Brandient to convey reliability and durability — a hard Germanic register aligned with the category's quality codes, so the brand itself makes the quality case.
Hobbyst
The entry tier has its own buyer: the occasional user who values approachability and price. Hobbyst — named and packaged by Brandient around affordability and ease of use — speaks to that buyer directly, and its lighter register gives the tier a clear voice of its own beside Panzer.
Hoff
Lighting runs from domestic fixtures to IP65 street-class equipment — a full technical category. Hoff, a Brandient creation, carries that entire span under one name, giving Dedeman a single, credible lighting brand from the home to the light-professional class.
Holzer
Hand tools are the fit-out trades' most frequent purchase. Holzer — a Brandient name and packaging system — brings that tier into the house-brand portfolio: flooring hammers, insulated electricians' pliers, chrome-vanadium kits, completing the tool offer from DIY to light-professional under a register consistent with Panzer and Baudeman.
Qizo
Home fitness is an adjacent category with proven private-label economics. Brandient created Qizo (2018) to claim it: resistance, balance, and mobility accessories under a register of its own — the portfolio's step into home wellbeing, built on the same own-brand logic that carries the rest of the range.
Grünman
The powered garden is a category of its own. Grünman gives it a dedicated brand — name and packaging by Brandient, with a register that anchors the category itself (grün — green). Together with Versay, the garden offer runs on two strong, complementary brands.
Versay
Growing and decorating is the garden's second market, with a purchase logic of its own. Versay — a Brandient name-and-packaging creation — serves it in full: substrates and organic fertilizers through garden decor and structures. With Grünman it completes a two-brand garden architecture, each brand leading its half of the category.
Beyond the master brand and its labels, the partnership has run for over fifteen years:
- a 2013 visual-identity and label-system refresh,
- the 2015 website reconstruction,
- 2017 employer-brand and organizational-culture work, in-store and signage design (2023),
- and the brand’s 20th- and 30th-anniversary programs. The 30th-anniversary platform is characteristic of how the brand is handled: rather than a boastful celebration, it took a register of thanks and gratitude, because understatement is truer to Dedeman’s personality than self-congratulation.
The relationship also extended to Dedeman’s sponsorship of Team Romania, with the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee, carrying Olympic values to the athletes at eye level — a cobranding system that kept Dedeman primary across its permutations and mapped the brand’s world of tools and building onto the idea of building athletic performance.
