Turning a telecom-originated fintech into a digital-banking brand
When Alpha Bank Romania acquired the platform, product portfolio, customer base and engineering team of Orange Money Romania, it faced a strategic challenge: transforming a telco-owned fintech into a stand-alone digital-banking brand — one that could combine the trust of an established bank with the simplicity and speed people expect from a digital financial service. The acquisition handed the bank a running digital business overnight; it also handed it a branding problem that would decide whether the move paid off. Brandient was appointed to develop the brand’s strategy and the new identity.
Orange Money’s users had chosen a telco-native, app-first service precisely because it did not feel like a bank. Fold that audience into an incumbent institution under the wrong name and the very digital-native appeal the bank had paid for could evaporate. Keep the Orange Money name and the platform stays tethered to a telco that no longer owned it. What the bank needed was a stand-alone identity that carried the credibility and financial backing of a real bank while keeping the lightness of the platform it was absorbing — a bank-backed fintech that read as neither a legacy bank’s side project nor an orphaned app. Alpha Bank turned to Brandient to create it.
The answer was a coined name, evrixa!, drawn from the Greek evrika — "I have found it," Archimedes’ cry at the moment of discovery, when a problem suddenly resolves into an obvious answer. It reframed everyday banking as a series of small "found it" moments: the fast payment, the clear balance, the thing that simply works. The choice also quietly referenced Alpha Bank’s own Greek heritage, a cultural thread connecting the parent brand to its new digital proposition. The exclamation mark, carried into the logotype, fixed that energy in the signature itself and set an informal, mobile-first, optimistic tone — the opposite of institutional banking’s usual register — while the name’s freshness put clear distance between the new brand and both of its parents.
The positioning made a virtue of the hybrid the bank had assembled: the stability, license and reputation of an established bank joined to the agility and 100%-digital experience of a fintech. For customers, continuity was deliberate — the products and functionality carried over, and cards issued under the old identity kept working — so the change read as an upgrade rather than a disruption. The result gave Alpha Bank a digital-native brand able to compete on its own terms in one of Europe’s most contested retail-banking markets, without asking the platform’s existing customers to feel they had been absorbed into a bank.
