Patria Bank
A young bank with a mature identity
In 2015, AXXESS Capital’s Emerging Europe Accession Fund brought together two financial institutions — a commercial bank and Patria Credit, the largest Romanian non-banking micro-finance institution — with the ambition of operating them under a single brand. Brandient was mandated to shape that brand end to end: its name, its architecture, its positioning and its identity.
Brandient built the new institution on the name Patria. The choice was deliberate rather than inherited: between the two existing brands, Patria — Romanian for homeland — carried a rare semantic and emotional charge, read as wholly positive and aspirational, and fit a client base that ranged from the city to the countryside, whereas the alternative commercial-bank name read as urban-only and far narrower in reach. The decisive factor, beyond resonance, was protectability: Patria was already trademark-registered across the relevant classes, giving the merged institution a defensible name from day one. Brandient also chose "Patria Bank" over the inverted "Banca Patria" — both to continue the naming logic the Patria Credit brand had already established and to set a quiet, modern tension between the warmth of Patria and the plain confidence of Bank. The Patria symbol, inspired by Romanian popular motifs and Brâncuși’s Endless Column, was carried over from the 2009 Patria Credit identity and evolved — the wordmark opened from small caps to capitals for legibility, and a color system was introduced to tell Patria Bank and Patria Credit apart within one coherent visual language.
The positioning was relationship marketing: Patria as the bank that serves its clients in the most personal and human way it can — through accessibility, familiarity, flexibility, guidance and long-term commitment, staying alongside them step by step. Rather than build the case on demographics alone, Brandient grounded the difference in how the bank actually worked — decentralized, human decision-making and eligibility judged on real cash flow rather than paperwork — and distilled it into a single promise: Pas cu pas, alături de tine ("Step by step, alongside you"). Five values — human closeness, flexibility, professional responsibility, initiative and involvement — anchored a brand DNA drawn in large part from Patria Credit’s empathetic, community-rooted culture. Because in a service brand the people are the brand, Brandient took that DNA into the organization itself through an internal brand-engagement program built to align a young institution — assembled from two different cultures — around its new identity.
A three-part architecture ordered the offer — Patria Bank, the Patria Credit micro-finance sub-brand, and a co-brand with Poșta Română that placed banking within reach across the country’s postal network of branches, windows and mobile agents. The architecture followed one governing rule: every alliance and every line carried the Patria parent, so the family read as one institution speaking to several audiences rather than a set of separate names. In a market where more than half of Romanians were still without a bank account, the brand gave shape to a genuine ambition: the democratization of access to financial services.
