City of Oradea

Place branding — the discipline’s hardest brief, and the rare city where the work was to choose, not to invent.

The people who study branding for a living agree on one uncomfortable truth: a place cannot be advertised into greatness. A city is judged by what it does, not by what it says about itself — you cannot brand a place you have not changed. It is the hardest brief in the discipline, because most cities that commission a brand are asking for a reputation they have not yet earned.

Oradea was the opposite case. Here the reality had quietly outrun the reputation.

In little more than a decade, under mayor Ilie Bolojan and the administration team he built around him — three consecutive terms of it — this Art Nouveau city on Romania’s western border had remade itself. Its historic center was restored building by building, its squares returned to its citizens, the country’s largest ensemble of Art Nouveau architecture brought back to life, its geothermal waters turned into a wellness economy. It came to have the smoothest traffic and, by its own residents’ reckoning, the safest streets in Romania; it became the most efficient absorber of European funds among the country’s county seats, and the only Romanian member of Europe’s circle of Art Nouveau cities, alongside Vienna, Brussels, Budapest and Barcelona. Other mayors came to study it. By 2019 it was drawing close to a quarter of a million visitors a year and ranked among Europe’s best-value destinations — a phenomenon of local governance, and a quiet argument that a Romanian city could simply decide to become excellent.

And yet, when the Visit Oradea team asked Brandient to build the city’s brand, the audit returned a verdict at once humbling and liberating. Oradea did not have a confused brand, or a damaged one, or a brand that carried negative associations. It had a brand that had simply fallen into oblivion — silent so long it had forgotten its own advantages. The transformation had outpaced the city’s reputation, and the task was not to repair a perception, nor to manufacture one, but to let the truth catch up.

The mayor’s brief, in his trademark economy of words, said the same thing the textbooks do — only better. "I don’t want the brand to overbid reality." "I want a brand with substance." "See who you would bring us here." It is, in three sentences, the whole doctrine of modern place branding: substance before symbol, no promise the city cannot keep, and a clear sense of exactly whom the brand is for. And the brief was credible because the people who gave it governed by it — the same administration that had remade the city ran it with the exactness it now wanted in the brand. A city brand, after all, is only ever as true as the place behind it.

The strategy was earned the long way. Brandient listened to the city through six of its representative communities — its faiths, its academics, its businesspeople, its young people, its journalists, and its administration — each asked, in effect, to draw its own map of what Oradea truly is; alongside a separate conversation with the mayor and his team, desk research, and a field journey through the city with the whole team of consultants and designers.

Two findings then shaped everything. The first: a destination brand rests on a community brand — a city seduces visitors only if it first holds its own people — so the priority had to be the community, and within it the young, because, as the mayor put it, a city without talented young people has no future. The second was the thesis the whole case turns on. If a brand is reality plus story, truth plus imagination, then Oradea was the rare case in which there was nothing to invent; the difficulty was the opposite of the usual one — not scarcity but abundance, a city so loaded with meaning that no single symbol could do all of it justice.

That problem produced the solution. Brandient positioned Oradea as a cosmopolitan community with the intimacy of a small town and the grace of slow living, and gave it a symbol built to hold many meanings at once: the Supercrown — not a drawing of any historical artifact, but a metaphor for the city’s stature and singularity, five crowns and a heart. A crown for the Art Nouveau architecture, the Museum City; a crown for the geothermal nature of baths and butterflies and water lilies, the Geothermal City; a crown for the royal past, the City of Kings; a crown for the many faiths, the City of Religions; a crown for the many cultures, the Cosmopolitan City; and at the center a heart, for the people of Oradea — for their harmony, their beliefs and, above all, their children.

The number is not arbitrary. Five kings were laid to rest in Oradea’s medieval cathedral — among them Saint Ladislaus, who founded the city — so the City of Kings is no flourish but a fact of the ground; and five confessions raise their cathedrals and their synagogue within sight of one another, so the City of Religions is simply the skyline read aloud. The Supercrown does not embellish the city. It gathers what the city already holds.

What the brand finally said of Oradea was what Oradea had become: a welcoming place, a must-see for its visitors, a godsend for investors, and an irresistible alternative for anyone who wants to raise their children in safety, in nature and harmony, in tolerance and civility. It crowned the Art Nouveau Capital of Romania with a promise written, deliberately, in English — Art Nouveau, Life Nouveau. In a city of two languages and many cultures, to choose Romanian or Hungarian would have been to take a side; to speak international was itself the cosmopolitan statement. The line begins in something concrete and indisputable — the architecture — and arrives at something still becoming: a newer, freer, more hopeful life. They come for Art Nouveau; they stay for Life Nouveau.

The promise then went to work. Over the year that followed, Brandient carried the brand into the city’s voice and its streets — a multilingual destination story (a "chosen city… led with a vision, not left to the will of the times"), a green-city chapter, walking and cycling routes, an Instagram-able Oradea, and a set of "five lessons" the city now offered the rest of the country. In 2022 the relationship deepened again, into a brand of its own for the Oradea Fortress, the citadel at the city’s heart; and that same year Oradea was voted Europe’s best Art Nouveau destination, ahead of Budapest and Barcelona — its chosen ground, recognized.

Brandient had named the real risk at the outset: a city brand belongs not to the mayor or the city hall but to its public, and its danger is that it falters when the people who built it move on. They have since moved a long way on — the mayor who rebuilt Oradea, and the team around him, went on to the country’s highest offices, and Ilie Bolojan became prime minister of Romania. The strategy’s closing line — that Oradea is "a model for a transformative Romania" — reads now less like a flourish than a forecast. The truest measure of the work is the simplest: built on something real, the brand has never had anything to fear from the truth.
