CRH
A global builder lands in Romania — localizing and launching CRH on Day-1 of a sector-defining ownership change
In 2014 the merger of Lafarge and Holcim created the largest building-materials company in the world — and, to satisfy competition regulators across several continents, forced the divestiture of a multi-billion-euro portfolio of assets. The buyer was the global Irish group CRH; in Romania, that meant taking over Lafarge’s entire local operation — cement plants at Hoghiz and Medgidia, a grinding station at Târgu Jiu, plus concrete, aggregates and the rest of a group of companies — and becoming, overnight, one of the largest players in the market. The brand a whole company would have to step into on the morning of the change had to be ready on Day-1.
The defining fact of the brief was that the brand already existed. CRH arrived with a finished global identity — a navy-blue square holding the compressed CRH letters, a stepped "cube" supergraphic, a navy-and-white world set against gray concrete photography — built centrally as a worldwide toolkit and rolling out simultaneously across the group’s newly acquired operations on several continents. Brandient’s task was therefore not to invent a brand but to localize one already in motion and put it on the ground for the Romanian launch: to take a system designed for everywhere and make it land, correctly and completely, here. That distinction governed everything — the discipline was fidelity to a global standard paired with the local judgment to deploy it well.
Across a tight Day-1 timetable, Brandient advised the company through the handover and rolled the global system out over the whole operation — stationery and a complete corporate-identity application set, presentation, brochure and digital templates down to email signatures, product datasheets and a corporate brochure, internal and external communication including the launch’s own messaging, the plant gates and grounds repainted from Lafarge green to CRH navy (totems, gate arches, welcome boards, safety billboards and wayfinding), fleet and silo livery across the working machines a cement company runs, branded uniforms and equipment, even the headquarters interior and the small currency of corporate life, the premiums and giveaways. A single logic held it together: a clear application matrix governing when the brand appears as symbol alone, as symbol with the localized "CRH Romania" wordmark, or as wordmark alone — so the same identity read consistently whether stamped on a letterhead, a cement mixer or a welcome board.
The launch itself was given a voice with care, because a takeover is also a farewell. The internal register acknowledged the company being left behind before welcoming the one being joined — "Mulțumim, Lafarge" (Thank you, Lafarge) opening onto marile începuturi, great beginnings — and the Romanian launch line set the new company’s temperament against that of the old: "CRH. Dinamism prin inovație. Forța prin loialitate." — dynamism through innovation, strength through loyalty. The point was continuity of people through a discontinuity of ownership: the same teams, a new flag.
The bagged-cement portfolio — the brand’s most visible face in a market sold by the bag — was transitioned from Lafarge to CRH transformativ, nu disruptiv (transformatively, not disruptively): lifting the old identity and adding the CRH endorser, sharpening the names and the information hierarchy, raising the quality cues, while keeping each product’s color and the range’s characteristic diagonal band as familiar shelf signatures. The color-coded family — among them the cements Romcim (orange, trusted by Romanian builders for years) and Rapidcem (cyan), and the Multibat masonry binder (red) — now read as one portfolio under one corporate mark, so the trust customers placed in each product carried over intact. The governing judgment was that, in a market where loyalty lives at the product and not the corporate level, the local product equity was the asset to protect: the endorser could change without the customer feeling the ground shift.
Underpinning it was CRH’s own way of running a brand: not one global masterbrand stamped on everything, but a three-level system — the worldwide CRH brand, the country company (CRH Romania, alongside siblings such as CRH Poland, Ukraine and India), and the local production sites beneath. Brandient set the Romanian architecture on that model — CRH as the endorser that replaced Lafarge, carrying the established local product brands — choosing the CRH-endorsed structure over absorbing the portfolio under a single adopted name precisely because it kept the country company recognizably part of a global family while leaving the trusted local names intact.
On Day-1 of one of the most closely watched ownership changes its sector has known, a global builder had to land in Romania as one coherent brand — and it did. Not long after, Brandient was part of the next transformation: a brand-definition and positioning program that moved the cement business from a producer of materials toward a provider of construction solutions — a client-oriented brand pairing innovative technological products with efficient logistics and strong customer support, presented as a trusted local brand backed by an international group. That chapter returned the Romanian business to a heritage name of its own — the revival of Romcim.
