Folkwear Society
Sharing and rediscovering traditional Romanian garments
Folkwear Society set out to do something a museum case cannot: keep Romania’s rural handmade dress alive by putting it back into use. Founded in 2014 as an anthropological project, it gathers the history and typology of village garments — the regional cuts, the embroidery, the techniques of their making — and works to return these pieces to contemporary wardrobes rather than leave them behind glass. Its ambition was to become the recognized home for that knowledge online, which meant it needed the one thing a young cultural initiative rarely has: a brand credible enough to stand for a whole tradition.
Brandient built that brand from the craft the project documents. The name, voice and identity were created together so the platform could speak with authority and gather a following, not merely catalog artifacts. At the center is a symbol lifted directly from the folk embroidery the society preserves — a motif from the textile vocabulary itself, rather than a decorative logo borrowed from fashion — so the project’s emblem belongs to the same tradition it sets out to keep alive. An "est. 2014" seal, a script wordmark and an earthy palette of cream, taupe and deep brown carry that hand-made character across every surface.
Because the value of the project is its imagery and its stories, the website was conceived as a visual platform first — built to hold a wealth of photographs and to organize them the way the field itself is studied, through history, typology and technique, with a manifesto, a collection and the people’s own stories alongside. The identity extends to packaging and everyday items, so the work reads as consistently handcrafted wherever it appears. The result is a small cultural venture given the standing of an established one: a coherent brand that lets Folkwear Society act as a destination and a publisher of living heritage, and to grow its audience without losing the authenticity that is its entire reason to exist.
