fulga
The cheeky little cow the client asked Brandient not to draw — and the character brand that made a regional dairy a national leader
At the time, Albalact was a minor regional contender in a Romanian dairy market where milk was sold the way it had always been sold — as a commodity, dressed in the same pastoral clichés of green fields and grazing cows, bought on price and trusted by habit. As the company modernized its industrial operation, it had the chance to do something the category had never really tried: launch a genuinely new milk brand rather than another own-label carton. It came to Brandient for the brand.
The strategic opening was emotional, not functional. Every competitor spoke of tradition, purity and health as an obligation; none had claimed the simplest truth about a glass of milk — that it is a small, everyday pleasure. Brandient positioned "drinking milk" as a symbol of joy, fun and light-heartedness, staking out a tone of voice the whole conservative category had left empty.
The name carried the idea in a single word: Fulga, Romanian for a snowflake — light, white, playful, and unmistakably about the product without ever saying "milk." Then came the counter-intuitive move. Wary of the pastoral cow that decorated every rival pack, the client had explicitly asked for a design with no cows at all. Brandient’s answer was not to remove the cow but to reinvent her — not a clichéd illustration but Fulga herself: a cheeky, characterful little cow with a personality, who even turns to show her rear on the back of the pack, based on a character designed by young and original artist Iuliana Vîlsan. The client, won over, got the one thing it had feared would be a cliché turned into the brand’s biggest asset.
Fulga became the first Romanian brand built around an animated character — a lovable maverick on a shelf full of earnest tradition. The personality did the commercial work: within a few years it had helped carry Albalact from regional producer to one of the two largest dairy companies in Romania, holding its own on the same shelves as the global players. Two decades on, Fulga remains one of the country’s best-known and best-loved dairy brands.
