GE Money & Garanti Bank
When two financial brands merge, the question is never "whose name wins" — it’s "whose trust survives."
When two established financial brands combine, the brand decision looks deceptively simple — agree on a name and a logo — but it carries the heaviest commercial risk of the whole integration. Each legacy brand arrives with its own reservoir of customer trust, recognition and cultural meaning, and the wrong architecture can spend both reservoirs at once. Brandient was engaged to give an independent brand-design opinion on the visual identity of the newly merged Romanian entity formed by GE Money — not itself a bank locally, but a financial trio of Motoractive, Ralfi and Domenia — and Garanti Bank, weighing how the combined business should present itself across every customer touchpoint.
The audit set the two legacy brands side by side on the dimensions that actually move banking customers: top-of-mind awareness, local footprint and advertising presence on one side; global stature and reputation on the other. Each brand also carried a distinct cultural promise — one reading as pragmatic, competitive and aspirational, the other as loyal, reliable and reassuringly formal. The strategic tension was clear: a name and identity that leans hard toward one legacy brand inevitably signals a hierarchy, and that signal has to be one the merged business can credibly stand behind and sustain over time. An identity that overstates a hierarchy the business does not mean to assert simply invites confusion.
To pressure-test the options, Brandient benchmarked a set of well-known international banking and financial-services mergers, each of which had resolved the same naming dilemma differently. Against that evidence three architecture scenarios were assessed. A sub-brand model offers the cleanest visual hierarchy but risks discarding the equity of the absorbed brand and unsettling its loyal customers. A dual, equal-billing association reads as ambiguous and provisional — the costliest path, because a name that looks temporary erodes the trust both brands spent years building. An endorsed-brand model — leading with the locally trusted brand while clearly signaling the backing of the larger group — emerged as the recommendation: it protects the equity on both sides, gives customers an unambiguous hierarchy, is inexpensive and low-risk to apply across communications, and keeps future options open as the integration matures.
The engagement was deliberately scoped as an advisory recommendation, not an identity build — a candid advisory opinion, delivered as a written report through several iterations alongside a set of logo explorations and identity presentation layouts. Its enduring value is the discipline it models: in an M&A brand decision, the name is a promise about who the merged business is and who stands behind it, and the architecture that wins is the one that keeps the most customer trust intact — not the one that flatters the larger party. The honest brief-versus-evidence trade-offs were surfaced plainly so the client could choose with open eyes.
