GSK Cold Portfolio
Portfolio discipline for category leadership
When GlaxoSmithKline’s corporate restructuring brought two of Romania’s best-known cold & flu brands — Coldrex and ParaSinus — into a single portfolio, the question was not which to keep, but how to make each one count. GSK turned to Brandient — the consultancy that in 2003 had rebranded Europharm for the GSK group, one of the most internationally awarded Romanian corporate identities — for strategic brand architecture consultancy.
Brandient’s work began with listening: interviews with the brands’ marketing and sales teams, with the CEO and — crucially — with pharmacists, the most trusted voices of the category; retail visits; and a holistic, equity-led reading of the market. From symptom to diagnosis. Rather than jumping to a single answer, the team weighed a full set of architecture scenarios against four lenses — marketing, branding, organization and business — so that the recommendation rested on more than instinct.
The diagnosis was portfolio discipline: a two-brand architecture, each brand managed separately and given a distinct strategic role. ParaSinus — the familiar, accessible Romanian staple and a darling of the country’s pharmacists — holds its ground and owns the value end of the category. Coldrex — already the category’s most trusted name — is grown toward leadership of the premium segment, its brand platform sharpened around a clear idea (the dependable specialist for the whole family) and a coherent set of values: trust, expertise and popular reach. The discipline lay in resisting the temptation to merge, dilute or reshuffle the two — and instead letting each play the role it was best equipped to win.
And the road to the consumer ran through the pharmacy: pharmacists were enlisted not as a sales channel, but as advocates of the brands — the category’s most trusted voice placed at the center of the strategy. The same architectural thinking traced back to Brandient’s earlier Europharm work for the group, where a disciplined identity system was built to let individual product brands speak without crowding out the corporate umbrella — a partnership-minded, "stronger together" logic that this portfolio strategy carried forward.
