Pant Hoot
The pant-hoot, made a symbol
Pant Hoot is a short documentary by Richard Reens — the story of Stany Nyandwi, a genocide survivor who has devoted his life to chimpanzee conservation and learned to speak with chimpanzees in their own language. Brandient designed the film’s poster and visual system, pro bono.
The brief asked for one iconic image that could carry the film’s whole spirit — funny and heartbreaking at once, a celebration of life and an urgent plea against extinction, around Jane Goodall’s conviction that only if we understand can we care. Brandient made the pant-hoot — the distinctive shape of a chimpanzee’s call, from a species whose DNA is 98.7% of the way to our own — into the film’s symbol and the heart of a bold, split-typographic poster.
The system reached beyond the poster: a title and caption typography for the film itself, and merchandising from postcards to street billboards. Pant Hoot went on to become a multi-award-winning short, collecting festival laurels from Berlin to Santa Barbara, Montreal and Rotterdam; in 2021 Brandient designed the campaign for its Dances With Films premiere in Los Angeles.
