ShopMania
A magnifying glass on the best price
ShopMania was Romania’s price-comparison platform — the place shoppers went to set offers from more than 250 online stores side by side, across electronics, appliances, fashion, beauty and home. Its problem was not on its own screen but across its category. Price comparison had become a commodity utility: useful, unmemorable, and impossible to lead. Local and international rivals all looked the same — plain wordmarks, or wordmarks bolted to the worn clichés of shopping, the tags, baskets and price signs of a pre-eCommerce age. In a digital category with almost no personality, no platform owned a distinctive position, and ShopMania risked competing on price and traffic alone in a race that has no winner.
Brandient read that emptiness as the opening. Where a category has no perceptual leader, design itself can install one — and a digital-native brand is free to be disruptive in a way its dated rivals are not. The strategic decision was to refuse the category’s visual language entirely and build an identity original enough to make ShopMania the platform shoppers remember. The governing idea put the act of searching at the center of the brand: shop smart, and find the price that suits you. The brand would not depict shopping; it would perform the search.
The logo carries the whole strategy. The ShopMania wordmark is examined by a moving magnifying glass that reveals the letters it passes over — a single visual-verbal move that says, before a word of copy, what the platform is for, and keeps enough wit to reward a second look. Because the brand lives on screens and in motion, the identity was built to be animated from the start rather than decorated after the fact: the magnifier became the brand’s principal, dynamic form, programmed to follow the cursor and respond as users move across the live site. The same mechanic extends into a graphic device built to do a commercial job — a lens that scans a row of blurred products and sharpens each one it crosses, dramatizing both the breadth of the offer and the platform’s core promise of finding the right product fast. Brandient carried the system through the brand guidelines, the online-banner communication, and the full design of the website itself, so the idea held wherever a shopper met the brand.
The result is an identity engineered to lead a category that had no leader — distinctive where every rival was generic, and native to the screen and the motion in which the business actually trades. By making the search the brand’s signature rather than competing on the same tired symbols, ShopMania was given a memorable position to defend instead of a price war to lose.
