Volvo Trucks
A brand audit and platform to carry Volvo Trucks beyond safety
Volvo Trucks is one of the world’s largest truck makers, and in 2005 its Romanian organization set itself a plain objective: leadership of the national commercial-vehicles market. The board-level question was what would actually decide it. A heavy truck is a working asset — customers buy uptime, running economics and the quality of the relationship after the sale as much as the vehicle itself — so the brand that wins is delivered less by the factory than by the people who sell, service and stand behind the trucks every day. Volvo Romania opened its brand revitalization accordingly: not with the trucks, but with what the brand already meant inside the organization and across the dealer network.
Brandient’s first instrument was a brand audit that read the company from the inside, listening at every level of the business and out to the dealers. The foundation was strong: Volvo’s bedrock values — quality, safety and care for the environment — were recognized everywhere and genuinely lived rather than merely claimed. The engagement’s decisive insight followed: the brand was being carried as a product — an excellent machine to be sold — rather than as a service — a relationship and a promise that continues long after the sale. The distinction is commercial, not semantic. In a product business, quality and price can carry the argument; in a service business every transaction depends on the person delivering it, and loyalty, repeat purchase and margin are earned through the relationship. For a premium marque, that is the real competitive lever.
From this reading Brandient shaped the brand platform. It kept Volvo’s enduring rational values and set an emotional register alongside them — creativity, determination and courage — so the brand could read premium and dynamic at once, rather than only solid and dependable. The platform reframed the brand as a service the whole organization delivers, and gave that strategy working form: an internal-brand program aligning culture and recruitment with the brand’s personality — a strong brand attracts strong people as surely as it attracts customers — and a route to advocacy through the dealers, the brand’s most credible ambassadors at the point where customers actually experience it.
The work did not stop at strategy. Brandient took the platform into the building, beginning with a brand-fundamentals seminar that gave staff a shared language: a brand is a relationship, not a logo, and in a service business it inspires its own organization before it ever inspires a customer. On that ground Brandient built an internal campaign around one galvanizing idea — we don’t only work at Volvo, we are Volvo — carried onto posters and the most ordinary of objects, a branded set of mugs pairing workers’ own voices with the platform’s new attributes: our trucks are good, but our people are even better. The intent was commercial, not decorative — the people whose daily behavior is the brand, recognizing themselves in it.
The engagement left Volvo Romania with a coherent brand foundation — premium yet dynamic, rational yet emotional — and a working program to make it felt consistently from the showroom floor to the service bay, with employees and dealers as the brand’s first and most credible advocates. The reading has aged well: in the years since, the truck business has moved decisively toward selling uptime and partnership rather than vehicles alone — the ground this platform staked out in 2005.
