Zentiva
A half-century pharmaceutical brand, rearticulated around its values
Zentiva is Romania’s oldest working medicines factory. Founded in 1962 as the Bucharest Pharmaceutical Plant, known for decades as Sicomed and renamed after the Czech group Zentiva acquired it, the plant reached its fiftieth year in 2012 as the largest pharmaceutical manufacturing site in the country — and, since 2009, as the manufacturing arm of Sanofi, one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical groups. The anniversary posed a board-level question, not a ceremonial one: what does this factory stand for inside its new owner, and why should the group keep investing in it?
A captive generics manufacturer does not compete for consumers. It competes for confidence and continued investment from within its own group, and the test it must pass is relevance and dependability, not distinctiveness. Brandient therefore set relevance and sustainability ahead of differentiation: a manufacturer’s worth is read through what the wider organization can rely on it to deliver, day after day, rather than through a single eye-catching claim.
From that reading came the governing idea: the manufacturer on duty — producătorul la datorie, the producer always at his post. Rather than rest the brand on one attribute, the positioning named, as a deliberate framework, the promises a generics producer is actually judged on: good quality held at low cost, versatility across technologies and product types, efficiency won through performance rather than corner-cutting, speed of reaction to the group’s requests, and an organization aligned behind shared objectives. "On duty" gave a fifty-year industrial story a forward-looking sense of purpose rather than a nostalgic one.
Because a manufacturer’s promise is kept on the factory floor or not at all, Brandient built a brand-engagement program so the positioning lived first through the people who make the medicines. Employees were taken through what a brand is — the most trusted management tool an organization has — and through the values that bind the people who carry it: care, integrity, responsibility, respect and innovation. Most powerfully, the program reframed factory work as a service to society: each time you come to work, it said, remember that today you may help heal someone — or even save a life. That moral charge turned a manufacturing job into a vocation, and moved the brand from a functional register to an aspirational one.
The fiftieth anniversary then carried the idea outward on a single warm platform — Pe mâini bune. De 50 de ani. (in good hands, for fifty years) — deliberately inflected for three audiences. Inside the factory it addressed the makers directly: Romania’s health is in good hands — yours. To the public it said: your health, in good hands, for fifty years. And to the group it reported, in the group’s own language: the manufacturer on duty. The factory itself became the main medium — exterior flags, the entrance hall and reception, corridors, locker rooms and meeting rooms carried the messages, and an anniversary panel named the people of Zentiva, so the employees stood at the center of the half-century story. A collection of commemorative anniversary stamps, press and outdoor advertising, a press kit and an anniversary newsletter extended the celebration to the public record.
The position held. In the anniversary year itself the group inaugurated new production capacity at the Bucharest site — the concrete form of the confidence the brand was built to earn. The plant went on to outlast another change of ownership, passing with the Zentiva business from Sanofi to new investors in 2018, and in 2022 it marked sixty years of uninterrupted production as one of the group’s principal manufacturing sites. The manufacturer on duty is still at his post.
