Ana Are Mere
A natural apple-juice brand built on Romania’s first reading lesson
Behind Ana Are Mere sits a portfolio producer with an ambition larger than its budget. Vinăria Natura, the Panciu estate in the Casa Panciu / Domeniile Panciu group, was building a stable of consumer brands — alongside Setilă and Sagio — to move its natural juice out of anonymous, private-label production and onto the shelf under names shoppers would ask for by name. The strategic problem was the one every regional food producer faces: the natural-juice aisle is owned by national players who can buy the awareness a small house cannot. Winning a place on that shelf by out-advertising the incumbents was never an option. The brand had to earn recognition some other way.
Brandient answered that business question with the name itself. Ana are mere — "Ana has apples" — is the sentence almost every Romanian learns to read first, the line in the primer that teaches the alphabet. Choosing it as the brand name meant the producer was launching with something no advertising spend can buy: a name the entire market already knows by heart, on the day it reaches the shelf. The name does the work that a media budget would otherwise have to do, which is precisely why it was the right instrument for a challenger that could not outspend the category — recognition without a campaign.
The identity made that familiarity tangible by giving Ana a face. She is drawn as a folk-art character in traditional Romanian dress, her bell-shaped skirt patterned with apples and rendered in a naïf, woodcut-like hand, and she is carried consistently across the range — bottles and cartons, and the small fruit labels — so that the same warm, hand-made character signs every pack. The choice of a hand-drawn heritage figure over slick produce-aisle photography was a positioning decision, not a stylistic one: it tells the shopper this is a natural product with a Romanian story behind it before a single ingredient is read, and it lets one memorable character stand in for the brand across a line that runs well beyond apples, into pear, plum, peach, cherry and grape. The palette stays loyal to the orchard — apple red and apple green — and the recycled-paper feel of the packaging keeps the promise of "produs natural" visible at arm’s length.
The result is a brand whose central asset is durable by design. A name lifted from the national reading primer cannot be copied, cannot date, and does not need to be re-taught to each new shopper; the character gives that name a face the producer can carry across every fruit it bottles and every pack format it adds. For a regional house competing against national budgets, that is the commercial point — a brand that arrives already remembered, built to scale across the range and to keep its meaning long after any launch.
